MekWars and MegaMekNET
MekWars turned MegaMek from a game you played with friends into a campaign you lived in. Every player had a hangar, factories built units for a virtual currency, a map showed who held which world, and a lobby connected you to a dedicated MegaMek host without any firewall fiddling. The archived site credits the original idea to Helge Richter, who was also among MegaMek's lead developers in 2003.
MegaMekNET, its 3025-era campaign server, became in Sarna's words one of the longest running MekWars campaign servers. Players fought for a Great House, as a Periphery raider or as a mercenary, cycle after cycle.
The 2006 snapshot shows the server tracker, the forums and a game installer of about 320 KB; the 2007 snapshot the MegaMekNET 3025 campaign. The site still stands, unchanged since 2021.
