MekTek and the MekPaks

MekTek began in 1999 as an online community around the MechWarrior games, founded by Vince McMullin. Its MekPaks, unofficial mod packs for MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, raised the number of playable units to more than 120, with new BattleMechs, battle armour, infantry, maps and weapons. According to Sarna, some of those designs later inspired additions to BattleTech canon.

In 2009 the team announced that it would hand out MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries for free. Microsoft cleared the rights in April 2010, and for three years the game was a free download from MekTek. In 2013 the site shut down and the studio that had grown out of the community, Studio MekTek, turned to a Heavy Gear title.

The 2002 snapshot shows the early portal with leagues, skins and a recruitment zone; the 2011 snapshot shows the board for the free MechWarrior 4. MekTek is back online today and listed in our directory.
